Replacing a transformer: when, how, and how fast

End of life, failures, a site that outgrew its machine: a replacement is decided as much on the worksite as on the transformer. The method, from the nameplate to the removal of the old unit.

The four triggers

Nobody replaces a transformer "to see". Four situations dominate: end of life (a well-run transformer lives for decades, but the insulation ages inexorably), recurring failures that signal advanced ageing (see common failures), a power need that has outgrown the machine, and energy obsolescence: on a heavily loaded site, an old unit can lose in losses what a Tier 2 replacement would pay back within a few years.

Like-for-like, or better?

The like-for-like reflex is reassuring but often sub-optimal: a replacement is the one chance to resize (the site has changed in twenty years), to move to today's loss levels, even to change technology, a cast resin dry-type where fire safety has grown in importance, an ester fluid where the environment demands it. The extra cost of thinking it through is zero: ask for both scenarios to be priced.

Surveying the existing unit: the nameplate first

Everything starts with a sharp photo of the nameplate: power, voltages, vector group, impedance, year. Add three overview photos (footprint, connections, surroundings) and the dimensions of the pit or room. With that, a replacement can be priced without a visit; the special cases (civil works to redo, difficult access) show on the photos.

The real subject: the worksite, not the machine. The new unit is the simple part. What structures a replacement is access and lifting (doors, clearances, crane), the outage window (negotiated with operations), and the removal of the old unit. Anticipating those three points at quotation stage avoids bad surprises on the day; state the site constraints in the dedicated field of our configurator.

Continuity of service and schedule

Our range lead times (15 to 18 weeks delivered) are made to be planned: the outage is set on the confirmed delivery date, not the other way round. For sites that cannot wait for a definitive machine after an incident, transitional solutions exist (rental unit, temporary sharing): raise it at enquiry stage, the arrangement takes preparing.

And the old transformer?

Removal does not end with the lift: a used transformer follows the professional WEEE route (oil, metals, possible pollutants in older units); the framework is summarised on EU compliance. The point to retain: traceability of the disposal protects the holder, keep the certificates. And while the fleet keeps running, the spare parts line covers the in-between years.

Frequently asked

Can a replacement be quoted without a site visit?

In the vast majority of cases, yes: nameplate photo + overview photos + room dimensions are enough for a firm quotation. A visit is only needed for genuinely atypical access configurations.

Will the civil works need redoing?

Not always: at equal or close power, modern footprints are often compatible. A change of technology (oil-immersed to dry-type) or an uprating can require it; that shows up at study stage, never mid-worksite.

What if the unit has failed completely, as an emergency?

Contact us with the nameplate: we look at the replacement machine and transitional solutions in parallel. The worst option is waiting; every drifting week ends up in the final schedule.

What happens to the old transformer?
