A transformer hums, that is normal. But when the noise rises, changes tone or starts to crackle, it is no longer a detail: it is a signal. Here is how to read what your unit is trying to tell you.
Every transformer emits a low, steady hum, around 100 Hz (twice the 50 Hz grid frequency) and its harmonics. This noise comes from magnetostriction: under the magnetic field, the core laminations expand and contract very slightly, dozens of times a second. It is inherent to operation, present from the moment the unit is energised, and broadly constant. A silent transformer does not exist.

One category of noise is not just an acoustic-comfort matter: crackling, frying or snapping sounds, especially inside an oil-immersed unit, can betray partial discharge or a developing arc. This is a potentially serious signal, all the more so if it comes with one of the following:
Before concluding, document it: log when the noise appears (at what load, at what time of day), check accessible external fixings and the state of the fans, and, on an oil unit, consider an oil / dissolved-gas analysis (DGA) that "listens" inside the unit without opening it. These turn an impression into a diagnosis.
A transformer that becomes loud and hot and trips and has twenty years of service is not posing a noise question, but an end-of-life one. At that point, patching it up piece by piece often costs more than replacing it with a new, better-sized, low-loss unit. Common causes are: a higher load, harmonics from non-linear loads (drives, IT), gradual loosening (core clamping, panels, radiators), resonance with the room, or worn fans. More rarely, crackling can betray a developing internal fault.
When the change is sudden, when the noise sounds like crackling or frying (not a hum), or when it comes with heat, tripping or a drop in oil level. In that case, call a qualified professional without delay.
